Vehicle raising + jacking up

In the back

Anheben hinten Here one can set the jacking equipment directly under the battery basket,

not however under a battery!

The battery basket has in front corner a triangular metal reinforcement, this is the ideal point for the jacking equipment to be set. In order to preserve the plastic coating of the battery basket, I recommend padding the jack with wood.

aufbocken hintenJacking can also take place under the leaf springs, best directly under their fixing bolts. The jack is protected in three directions from slipping away and the vehicle is then very stable.

If you're changing the springs, jack under the battery basket. I recommend to remove the batteries beforehand to lighten the vehicle and reduce the stress on the battery basket.

In front

anheben und aufbocken vorneBlock first the rear wheels with a wedge or the like and the emergency brake tighten. Series 1 vehicles with the emergency brake on the front wheel need particular care in chocking the rear wheels (And don't set the emergency brake, or you'll never get the front wheel off - RRY).

One sets the jacking equipment under the vehicle floor approx. under the seat. Here the drip tray is strengthened by the separation between electronics and floor space. In order not to hurt the plastic, one must in between-put a pad, thick cardboard or the like as protection. (I like to jack at the rear of the front fender well, which is fiberglass - RRY)

One supports the vehicle in front with two jack stands (which should rest on the FRONT of the front fender well, which is fiberglass - RRY). Theoretically only one support is needed, but it's tricky, I've knocked the vehicle off the stands more than once.

Jacking equipment

It does not have to be always the hydraulic jacking equipment. I use my screw jack with rubber blocks, which is actually ideal for lifting a City-el.

As a dealer I would build special jacking equipment, such as used in racing and with motorcycles. It looks like a hand truck, only instead of the "loading area", a fork hooks onto the rear transverse stabilizer. The fixing clips around the stabilizer must attach relatively far outboard, so that the stabilizer is not bent.

By hand

Some el pilot contend that el at each end can be lifted by hand. In former times I also did this, if the jacking equipment were too far away. No more...

In an emergency one can lift the vehicle in front where in the picture the supports are set.

In the back one places their back to a wheel and lifts at the wheel housing.(If you MUST do this, take the batteries out first if you can! - RRY)

Improper lifting of heavy weights is a good way to ruin your back!
